Women’s Handball Snatch a Close Victory

An impeccable, close win for York in women’s handball early on Friday morning! With an end score of 18-19, York took the lead and won by a single point against Lancaster.

An intense, fast-paced match happening beside squash, the first half of the match was dominated by Lancaster, with a consistent lead. For a match beginning at 9am, the crowd was incredible, with a surprisingly large audience from both York and for Lancaster.

No. 90 scored the first goal for Lancaster within the first few minutes of the match, but York made an incredible comeback. However, a number of fowls from York meant over three missed chances for York to score a goal. Number 90 for Lancaster was an incredible player, scoring a number of goals before York makes it’s first.

Despite a lead from Lancaster, York’s win was only possible because of its incredible defence throughout the match, particularly for the first half. The keeper made a number of incredible saves, along with the York team making a number of strong passes.

The York captain, number 14, made her first goal of the day about 15 minutes into the game. At 5-3 for a game like handball, this was still everyone’s game. Whilst Lancaster was in the clear lead, York stopped over 5 almost-goals for Lancaster, and at 19 minutes, York called for a time-out: in handball, each team is permitted one time-out per half, if they choose to.

Following a handful of substitutions from Lancaster, the game continued, closely following another fowl. Two more scores from Lancaster’s captain leaves the score at 8-5, with 7 minutes left of the first half of the game.

However, York made a strong comeback within these last 7 minutes, with incredible goalkeeping from number 5, and number 21 making two further goals for York. Before the break, there was a definite turning point imminent. Nonetheless, Lancaster continued to take the lead, with the captain scoring a final goal before half-time, with a final score of 10-8.

With a game like handball, 10-8 was a respectable score for both teams, yet York dominated in this half of the game, with a score from York within the first two minutes.

Despite a number of strong goals from Lancaster, York was certainly more intense in this half of the match. Two penalties to York meant 21 scored two further successful goals for York, and with just over 20 minutes left, Lancaster called for a time-out.

With 19 minutes left, the game could have still gone in any direction, at a score of 14-14, and despite Lancaster’s number 90’s incredible performance, and scoring another goal for Lancaster, a penalty meant York was able to bring the score back to an even 15-15, and returning to an even chance of winning.

Nonetheless, with 15 minutes remaining, York made two substitutions and kept playing well. Their change in strategy certainly worked to their advantage, with 15 making a goal, leading to York leading the match for the first time since the game started, and managed to keep this lead for the remainder of the match, despite Lancaster’s efforts.

Whilst Lancaster’s slight comeback with a number of successful goals, York remained in the lead, and with minutes left, the score was at 18-19, with York taking the lead with a mere point.

However, this game emphasised how anything can change at any moment, and with a mere 30 seconds left on the clock, number 4 was presented with a red card, leading to a pause with only 22 seconds left of the game. The audience was on their feet, with the captain, number 21, having an intense chat with the referee.

With mere seconds on the clock, a penalty for Lancaster means that 14 makes an incredible attempt at scoring, but York’s number 5 makes an impeccable save, and York makes an amazing win.

Speaking to the York captain, number 21, along with players 4 and 5, describe a close win, and an incredible lead from Lancaster in the first half, but York’s ‘great defence’ and spirit lead them to an amazing win. Well done to York for a strong win, early on Friday!
