Futsal is a sport that is characterised by its five player teams, hard-surfaced court, strong emphasis on technical skill. A successful team is a team that is able to find creative ways to outwit and find or create openings in their opponents’ defence. Lancaster’s 1st team in Roses 2026 did an excellent job at defining what characteristics make a team successful.

The first half was brutal, with the first ten minutes of the first half being defined by consistent Lancaster pressure, and inability of York’s team to cope with this pressure. Lancaster’s team made great advances, and York’s team being unable to deal with these strong advances, resulting in 3 goals being scored by Lancaster in just the first ten minutes, York made none.

The rest of the first half is much of the same, consistent pressure and possession by Lancaster. York was able to create some good pushes; however, York’s good push was met with an excellent Lancaster defence; and most opportunities were brutally ended, except for one, with York making its first goal seventeen minutes into the first half, making the score by the end of the first half 6-1 in Lancaster’s favour.

The second half was characterised by determination from York to turn the tide being met with the superior defence of Lancaster. The first ten minutes of the second half consisted of York putting pressure on Lancaster and maintaining good possession. York did a brilliant job of creating opportunities for good pushes, with multiple shots being made, but none went through. Following this, Lancaster got a brilliant opportunity to get a goal with a free kick but was made unsuccessful by York’s defence. This is the point where everything starts to fall apart, with Lancaster having scored another goal, and immediately after the first goal, another goal was scored.

With a break being called, York was given some desperately needed time to recuperate and regain their strength. After this break, York was faced with immediate and intense pressure by Lancaster, and an unsuccessful defence resulted in Lancaster making another goal, bringing the score up to 1-9 in Lancasters’ favour.

Following the break, the situation continued to deteriorate for York, with another goal being made after the ball slipped out of the goalie’s hands. Nearing the end of the match, and being met with additional goals made by Lancaster, York landed its last goal with just 2 minutes left on the clock. However, the game isn’t over yet, and with just 28 seconds left on the clock, Lancaster scores another goal bringing up the score to 12-2.

Peggy Lee, team captain of York’s team summarises the game well, stating that she was “proud of the girls, they really put in everything.” This is backed up by Menna Shirras, a player from Lancaster’s team stating that the match was a “really well fought game, York got good towards the end.”
