A stalemate at the Women's 1st Football sees a 0 - 0 draw

A beautifully sunny day saw the perfect conditions to play some football. At the start of the game, Lancaster seemed to dominate the play, winning a corner within the first 10 minutes. With the ball being held firmly in York’s final third, the Whites concede corner after corner. York’s defenders were working hard and managed to push a break into Lancaster’s half. Some class defending from both teams kept the score 0-0 for the first 15 minutes. York gets a shot off, but it goes wide for a goal kick. York continues to press high, keeping the play in Lancaster’s half. For Lancaster, the corners keep coming, not being able to find that path to the goal. York struggled again to get it out of their own half, conceding a free kick in a dangerous area. York survived and responded with a quick counter, with another shot just going wide. An unlucky touch from a midfielder gave Lancaster another turn at attacking, but the whites have it covered. Lancaster pushes once again, but the attack fizzles out, resulting in a York throw-in. York lost another foul in a dangerous area, giving Lancaster the chance for another cross. The Reds got a shot off, but it is inches off the post, just going wide. Off a strong York attack, the reds break free, leaving a one-on-one with the York keeper, but a good save keeps the scorecard blank. After a Lancaster foul and a caution from the ref, it’s finally York’s turn for a set piece. Following the free kick, a corner was awarded. The result? Another corner. A Lancaster break puts York’s keeper under a little pressure, but she easily handles it, then on the counter, the shot goes high. Another push from Lancaster now, winning a deep throw-in, but saved by the York keeper. After a skirmish for possession in the midfield, York rattles another ball over the bar. York makes a substitution late into the first half, whilst Lancaster holds the ball in York’s half of the pitch. York intercepts a backwards pass, and a cross finds a York striker, but the Reds keeper lunges forward to claim the ball. After a long red press, a chip over the keeper sees the ball flying towards goal, the crowd drops silent, and it bounces off the crossbar, and it is cleared away by the whites. A York chance manifests after some impressive dribbling, but is saved by the keeper, and then suddenly Lancaster are attacking again. A bad ball gives the keeper a respite, but Lancaster keeps coming back. York escapes and wins a corner. A close chance, but ultimately the keeper is there. A 0-0 result for the first half, but with so much energy on the pitch, everyone can feel: something is coming. 

A quick York kickoff sees the second half start with an early push for the first goal. Lancaster regained possession. A shot from outside the box bounces off the woodwork; it is an unlucky crossbar for the Reds. York won a free kick in Lancaster’s half. Could this be it? The striker finds the ball, but the defenders are on it. After a battle down the sideline, with throw in after throw in, the Reds keep pushing, but it ultimately results in a foul awarded to York. York are awarded a corner. A failed cross wins them another corner. It finds a head but falls just wide of the goal. Lancaster were pushing hard, but the flags went up for offside. Lancaster uses the break to make a sub, and it is once again York’s attack. Some quality defending from the Lancaster team sees them safe once again. It’s back and forth on throw-ins, with both teams slowing down and trying to reset. A Lancaster attack is claimed by York’s keeper. This results in a York attack with a shot from a tight angle being saved by the keeper. York wins a throw-in in a dangerous area, but a bad touch sees the ball go out. The Reds counter, having their turn for a dangerous throw-in, and a poor cross leads to a goal kick for York. York gets close, but the flag goes up for offside. York wins it back for a free kick and manages to get a corner for it. York wins another foul, and the Lancaster number 14 is shown a yellow card. A wide shot led to a Lancaster goal kick. After another five minutes of throw-ins, the Lancaster side wins a free kick, which is delivered into the box, but the shot goes wide. Lancaster pushes, but some good defending from York sees all their shots blocked. York has a player go down, but she’s back on her feet to defend against a Lancaster throw-in. Another shot for Lancaster, but it goes wide. York battles back and wins themselves another corner. The keeper comes out and punches the ball away, and a bad tackle from a York attacker leads to a free kick. Lancaster quickly gets themselves a corner, but the shot is delivered straight into the keeper’s gloves. It’s York’s attempt again, but it rolls out for a goal kick. York were still pushing though, but unfortunately lost a throw-in. After a possession change in the midfield, a corner for York is awarded. A close shot on goal, but it just goes wide. York breaks down the wing, and the ball makes it to the final woman, but a defender stretches to make a tackle. Another York chance is ruled offside, but another York corner is awarded: another York corner is cleared. After a tussle in the middle, York plays a long switch, with a player through on goal, but offside is called. York was still attacking, giving Lancaster no breathing room. The full-time whistle goes after a Lancaster clearance, the result 0-0. 

The result really couldn’t have been anything but a tie; both teams pushed themselves so hard, and it was such a close match, with scoring opportunities for both teams.
