The York minster light show returns this winter as the projections illustrate the history of York’s wildlife, with a cameo from a more mystical creature.
York BID and the Minster team up again in this year’s colour and light show. The display, composed of 630 individual lights, takes place outside on the south transept showing the history of the city and the development of its wildlife.
The story starts with York before mankind. It then goes through the Vikings, the Middle Ages, the Industrial Revolution, and all the way up to the present.
The broad time span gives an opportunity to show all types of animals that currently or once lived in York. Peacocks, wolves, deer, rats, ladybirds and many other creatures feature in the event. At one point, the head of a large dragon is projected onto the edifice.
The lights matched with the music, which means that it is an event well worth braving the cold for.
The light show is free and runs from Wednesday 12 February to Sunday 2 March 2025, from 6 pm to 9 pm, with the projection lasting about 10 minutes.
