York Defeated … What’s The Point Anymore?

Once again, Lancaster managed to secure the Roses win on Saturday night for the 3rd year in a row. Needing 181.5 points to win the event, the final score of the event was 241.5pts – 120.5pts. Lancaster has once again left York in the dust by over 100 points, and the York students were the ones leaving with their heads hanging low after being embarrassed for another year.

With over 140 fixtures, it’s hard to understand why York is being repetitively thrashed every year when our on-campus sports presence is massive. The competition just feels ruined. What is the point in holding this event for one side to be clearly advantaged against the other? It takes the suspense away from the games if we know Lancaster will dominate the competition.

Ever since COVID, Lancaster has won. But previous to that, it was very back and forth between who would claim the trophy. I do wonder what happened to York’s sporting presence in the years the event was cancelled. Did Covid have a weird side effect that made future Lancaster students sporting Gods, or have York just lost their spark?

With another defeat, I do wonder how long this competition will continue, or is Lancaster just fated to win for the next decade?

Despite the heartbreaking loss, it is hard to put any blame on the York students who played at Roses weekend, as their effort was astounding. To say this loss was definitely felt, the moral and sportsmanship never dropped in Lancaster, York remained respectful and in high spirits whilst away from home.

Hopefully, one day we can see the Roses cup return home to York (and soon) because I don’t think we can take many more defeats.
