The Vice-Chancellor for the University of York has stepped down from his role. The long-serving Charlie Jeffery has been in the position for 7 years now, joining the University in 2019 after being Senior Vice-Principal at the University of Edinburgh since 2014. Moving forward, he is taking up office at the University of Southampton, beginning there early next academic year.
During the search for a new Vice-Chancellor, Deputy VC Ken Badcock will act as interim Vice-Chancellor. Badcock joined the University in 2023, having been Senior Vice-Principal at Royal Holloway prior. He holds a doctorate from the Computing Laboratory at Oxford University.
In an email to University staff, Jeffery shared that he is honoured by his time at York, and that he leaves with “immense pride”. He intends to work with Badcock in his final months to continue “to build on the momentum” he has established. In his inaugural speech, Jeffery pledged to put sustainability, widening participation, internationalism and inclusive regional economic growth at the heart of his vision.
With Kier Starmer’s departure from No. 10 earlier this morning, there is clearly something in the air.
