It’s My Party, I’ll Cry If I Need To

The most recent faux pas of the UK political parties

UK politics is decidedly not normal. In fact, sometimes it is strange and can be downright insane. The last few months have seen us some funny moments where the parties have made blunders. Here are the highlights.

The Tories’ Typo:

The Conservative Party held a somewhat successful party conference this October, treating all visitors with a goody bag. In said goody bag was a chocolate bar wrapped in blue paper with Kemi Badenoch’s signature printed on the wrapper – any conservative’s dream, right? However, also printed on the bar was a conservative slogan: “When Labour negotiates, [Britian] loses”. The misspelling of Britain led to the mocking of the conservatives by the other parties, with a Labour source saying: “Yet another Tory Flake. They can’t proofread five words on a bar of chocolate.” Safe to say, this chocolate bar was not the treat the Conservatives needed.

Labour’s Literary Lapse:

Despite Labour’s mocking of this, they too are not immune from typos. In April of this year, due to the unfortunate passing of Councillor Vettraino, the Glenrothes Central and Thornton constituency had to hold a by-election. The Scottish division of the Labour Party printed leaflets for their candidate, Maciej Dokurno, but voters noticed something was amiss. The leaflet read: “Your [Scotish] Labour Candidate”, yet another guff on the spelling of the country the candidate lives.

Reform’s Recent Redesign:

Reform UK are in a similar boat, with their revolutionary idea to have a party football kit. Farage, who had previously complained about the ruining of the Union Jack flag, branded his own version of the symbol on the shirt. His previous complaints with Team England’s football kit for the 2024 European Championship, were the addition of coloured lines, where he claimed: “It’s a multicoloured cross, it bears no relationship to the St George’s Cross whatsoever.” Farage’s football kit saw a pale blue and white version of the flag, not seeing any of the classic red. He faced backlash on his design, especially based on his previous comments. Labour MP Mike Tapp commented: “Nigel Farage is a fake patriot, so it is quite fitting that he is wrapping himself in a fake British flag.”

Corbyn Creating Clashes:

Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana recently announced the formation of their new party, Your Party; however, there seems to be a contest over who is in charge. The membership sign-up was a mess, with an email being sent to supporters announcing their membership fee, and then a statement being released later that this email was unauthorised. This statement was signed by all members of the party, bar Zarah Sultana, and Sultana was the only one to post about the memberships on X (formerly Twitter). Sultana then announced that she did make the decision without consulting her co-leader, Corbyn, citing the development of a “sexist boy’s club” as the reason for her decision. What looks like a split in the party’s leadership has made people doubt the party’s strength, with one member admitting that is looked: “quite embarrassing”

The two major parties seemingly can’t spell, and Reform UK, the party leading the polls can’t seem to make up their mind about how the flag should look, and Your Party, the new party that promises to be the change for Britain, can’t decide who is running it. If you don’t laugh, you’ll cry.
