Celebrating Equality: International Women’s Day 2026

International Women’s Day falls on Friday (8th March), and here’s how you can celebrate.

Booze, Lectures, History… and a recognition for hard-working women.

International Women’s day comes around every year as a day designated to celebrating women; Their hard work, contributions to society and strength deserve to be commemorated. This Sunday will mark the 115th International Women’s day since it started in 1911. An opportunity to celebrate women’s fight for equality and inclusion. This years theme is ‘Give to Gain’, and there is plenty to do on and off campus to celebrate this year.

Brew York has released the IPA ‘Slay Queen’, a bold West Coast IPA brewed specifically to celebrate International Women’s Day. Brew York have said that the IPA is “inspired by the fearless spirit of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Slay Queen is a tribute to strength, independence and taking on the darkness head-on (stake optional)”. The IPA was carefully curated by a team of Brew York women. 

The Students’ Union hosted an event on Wednesday (4th March) entitled “When Women Give, the World Gains”. Hosted in Heslington hall, online ticket sales sold out quickly. The evening featured speeches, performances, spoken poetry, and an art exhibition. 

The Centre for Women’s Studies will be presenting their International Women’s Day keynote lecture, given by Juliana Mensah (English and Related Literature) at 1 pm in B/T/019, Biology on Friday. 

On Thursday, Fulford Social Hall will host a talk discussing the life and work of Edna Annie Crichton, and her pioneering role as Councillor, Chair of Housing, and Lord Mayor during the Second World War. She was the first female alderman who was granted freedom of the city and is recognised by a blue plaque on her former home in Clifton. 

So there is plenty to do in and around campus this week to celebrate the successes of strong women.
