Durham students expected not to return for summer term

Students at the university have been informed of cancellations of face-to-face events and teaching for the foreseeable future, with the expectation this will expand into their summer term.

Students at Durham University have been informed of cancellations of face-to-face events and teaching for the foreseeable future, with the expectation this will expand into their summer term.

As of Thursday 12 March, the university advises students to not expect to return for their final term of the academic year, over fears of the COVID-19 spreading across campus.  This measure has followed the virus declared as a ‘public health emergency’ by the World Health Organisation.

Despite these cancellations, the University will continue to remain open, but academic staff are encouraged to adapt their format so teaching can continue.

Furthermore, both students and staff are encouraged to either travel back or work from home in an attempt to prevent the risk of infection.

Rumours are now beginning to circulate across University of York about any potential decisions impacting summer term and exams. There is yet to be any new information confirmed by the University, with the last update being on 9 March, with new definitive new information.

The email sent to Durham students also stated the expectation this will expand into summer term at the Russell Group university. Durham has also advised students to expect not to return for their final academic term of the academic year, over fears of the ongoing spread of COVID-19.

This measure has followed the virus declared as an official ‘pandemic’ by the World Health Organisation on March 11. Despite these cancellations, the University will continue to remain open, but academic staff are encouraged to adapt their format so teaching can continue. So far, the University of York has not announced any new measures to tackle the virus since before national newspapers reporter yesterday night that the Government is preparing to move to the ‘Delay Phase’ of tackling the virus.

There has not been any new concrete information confirmed by the University of York since March 9.
