College Varsity 2021 Cancelled Due To COVID-19

YUSU have said there is a possibility that College Sports may start again later this year.

YUSU have confirmed that this year’s College Varsity between Durham University and the University of York has been cancelled.

Durham University made the decision in light of the suspension of all grassroots sport, as well as the uncertainty surrounding the duration of the current national lockdown.

YUSU supports this decision, stating: “We understand that students will be very disappointed with this news, however the priority has to be the health and safety of competitors and spectators. We also have to operate within the government regulations currently in place”.

The same YUSU statement announced the possibility of alternative College Sport events later in the academic year, should restrictions permit.

York Sport Union President Maddi Cannell shall along with the College Sport Committee, York Sport Union Committee, and YUSU Staff, discuss this possibility.

Cannell said on Twitter: “this is not the news I wanted to be sharing with students, however the decision has been made with the health and safety of competitors and speculators as priority”.
