York’s golfers in stuttering start to season

By Chris Parker

York’s golf team have had a slow start to the season this term, finally getting their BUCS campaign underway with a 4 -2 victory over Leeds Met on 25th November. Having lost their opening two games at home to Newcastle seconds and Leeds firsts in thoroughly demoralising fashion, the young team led by Michael Hamilton were eager to bounce back against the Yorkshire rivals.

York tends to struggle in a division which includes such sporting heavyweights as Sheffield and Leeds Met Universities. But the season has had its positive moments, with Dan Hines, a stalwart of the first team, producing a stunning hole in one on the fourteenth on his way to victory against Newcastle 2nds. Hines was thrilled with his first hole in one, although he was very concerned with the subsequent bar tab he would have to pick up – luckily the Newcastle boys left early for their long trip north.

With 2009 fixtures completed the Christmas break should give the team much needed time to regroup and focus themselves for the their tough BUCS Northern Conference Cup quarter final with Leeds Met on February 10th 2009.
