The York Netball team won a hard fought victory against a spirited St. John’s opposition beating them by 45 points to 34.

In a rarity for this tournament the UYNC entered into Varsity as underdogs with St. John’s playing in division higher. Despite a close first quarter, which ended 9-9, York soon found form and began to pull away in the second quarter thanks to the stunning accuracy of Goal Shooter Kay Masterson. The first half ended with York sitting on 22 points ahead of St. John’s 17.

Wing Defence Sarah Smith showed her value to the team as she provided several key interceptions that York were able to capitalise on while the attacking prowess of Wing Attack Cesca Dessain meant that York were able to seek out and mercilessly exploit the weaknesses of St. John’s.

The third quarter provided no surprises as York sought to cement their dominance and extend their lead. Good passing play from Centre Becky O’Dwyer and solid defending from Goal Keeper Jenni Williams meant that York went into the final quarter with a lead of 35-26.

A flurry of substitutions in the fourth quarter gave York renewed vigour and the team remained the dominant force in the match dictating the tempo and closing down any hope of a St. John fight back. The final score 45-34 gave York yet another 4 points to add to the Varsity score board.
