York moves up one place in Guardian rankings

imageThe Guardian’s annual university rankings have seen York edge one place up the league table into 16th.

After last year’s 17th placing in the overall university rankings, the University has failed to climb back into the top 10, falling behind the likes of traditional rivals Lancaster once again.

The table takes into account a number of variables including National Student Survey (NSS) data and other factors including student-staff ratios and career prospects.

York’s average teaching score dropped by 4%, whilst the NSS feedback score fell from 68% to 58%. However, the rise in position can be partly put down to improvements to the University’s overall NSS score and career prospects.

The table was topped by Cambridge, who achieved an average teaching score of 100, 24.7 points above York.

There is some good news for Uni students though – with city rivals York St John finishing a long way back in 94th position.

  1. People might knock it, but it’s progress in the right direction. This uni has got a bright future once Hes East is fully developed and in 10 or 15 years it will be a top, top University in a great city. That can only be good for us because it makes our degrees look that bit better.

  2. All I know is that, relatively speaking, York is a very good university. It isn’t right at the very top, but it deserves a lot more credit than some of the posters here give it. A uni being a few places higher or lower in a league table really does not affect your career prospects at all.

  3. York is mediocre at best, at worst it’s institutionally racist.

We all known that Oxford and Cambridge are first, then LSE, UCL, Kings College, Edinburgh and Durham. After that it’s just a game of Eenie Meenie Minie Mo, ip dip doo.

Last time I checked there was no string of prime ministers graduating from York…

Just put your head down, get good grades, and do a masters at a better university – then you’re sorted.

  4. Don’t be a hater. That kind of talk just creates a self-fulfilling prophesy where people just drift through their time at university lamenting their situation rather than excelling. What you get out of university is entirely your own making.

If it’s meant to be then it’s up to me.

  5. It’s a good university as it is and, when Hes East is done, you can expect it to be top 10 in the tables. However, if people like you go around slating it then league tables won’t mean a thing since its reputation will be being eaten away at by its own alumni…
