YO1 Mini Interview: Grinny Grandad

Grinny Grandad are a York based guitar/computer cross over band that offered a perfect fusion of humour, big beats and wailing at YO1 last Sunday.

How was playing YO1 for you?

It was an absolute blast! It’s not often we play large events in our home town, so this was a show we were really looking forward to. We find playing to a home crowd is always best, and this show didn’t disappoint.

What was the best thing you saw?

Apart from waving at the people that thought they were safely hidden while peeing behind the porta-loos, we really enjoyed Local F and Ceiling Demons, both local acts, and fit really well into the festival. I hope to see them at more festivals this summer. Oh and of course the legends that are De La Soul! We still can’t believe such legends as DLS played in York, crazy.

What programme do you use when re-working samples?

I mainly use a sequencer/DAW called Renoise. Everyone that I mention this to normally looks at me with a blank expression as if to say “wha…who?”, it’s not a very well known program, but I absolutely swear by it. It’s a cross between an old school tracker but brought bang up to date with everything you’d normally find in a modern sequencer. You should check it out! Audio-geek talk over.

What are the band doing next?

We’re touring the UK over the summer & autumn, playing festivals and a lot of Southern shows, and we’ll be headlining Fibbers in September. We’re also due to release a new EP through Finger Lickin’ Records, called “Keep Your Hands to Yourself” featuring the wonderful vocal talent of Kymberley Kennedy; you should check out her stuff too, amazing solo writer that produces & mixes all her own stuff.

Where does the name Grinny Grandad come from?

The name Grinny Grandad is actually named after one of my friend’s Grandad, he always used to sign birthday cards from “Grinny Grandad”. The night that I found this out, I was quite intoxicated & found this hilarious. Not quite sure why now!

What is…

The song that wakes up in the morning?

Anything from Abbey Road by The Beatles.

The song you play when you’re angry?

Tiptoe through the Tulips by Tiny Tim.

The song you play on the perfect summer’s day?

My Elastic Eye by The Chemical Brothers.

The song that’s been most unfairly overlooked?

The Postman Pat Theme tune, the 80’s version. Seriously, that song is a work of art, musically!

Your favourite use of sampling in a song?

Lesson 6 by Jurassic 5.

The song that never fails to get you dancing?

Give me back my Auger by Psychedeliasmith (made famous by Norman Cook on his Big Beat Boutique mix album). Coincidentally, I’ve got all the original stems for this track and plan to release a remix & play it out live at some point this year!
