Whitewash for men’s badminton

York 1sts,
Andrew Henderson
Talfryn Provis-Evans
Thomas Dainty/Baillie Watterson
Dan Hirst/Tim Robson

Men’s 1st’s badminton did York proud on wednesday with a convincing win over Liverpool’s 1st
team. The first match saw the crowd cheer on as Andrew Henderson and Talfryn Provis Evans
destroyed their opponents in two games, 21-7, 21-8 and 21-10, 21-7 respectively.
The crowds continued to cheer on the York boys as the doubles pairs stepped up to the plate,
however it is at this point that I find out that one of the powerhouses of smashing, Tim Robson,
has had a graceful fall from his bike on the way to the match, so the question on everyone’s lips is
will it affect his game? In short, no. Tim Robson and Dan Hirst take their first game in three ends,
14-21,21-9,21-19, however not without losing the first end due to some first-match jitters and an
intense final end that went right to the last point! Great communication between the pair, fantastic
last-minute line calls and some impressive defense from the boys secure the the first doubles game
for York, leaving the scoreline at a promising 3-0.

The second doubles game proves even more successful for Baillie Watterson and Thomas Dainty as
they sail through their first match 21-3 and 21-5, thanks to some impressive control and dominance
on the York side.

With the scoreline set at 4 to nothing, the buck is passed on to Andrew Henderson to win his 2nd
doubles to secure the win for York, and he doesn’t fail to impress. Some fancy footwork and mind
bending trick shots secure the match in 2 ends once again, 21-8 and 21-3.

The rest of the York team continue to show Liverpool exactly how to play the game, with Talfryn
winning his second singles match 21-18 and 21-15, to the cheers of the sidelined fans!
Thomas and Baillie demolish the Liverpool pair 21-6 and 21-5 with confidence and panache, with
the win secured the relaxed atmosphere helps the players enjoy their games much more, on and off
court the teams are in good humour and laughing and joking away!

Dan and Tim polish off the last game 21-8, 21-9 to secure the final win for York. FINAL SCORE:
8-0 to York!
Full props to Liverpool for taking their defeat in good humour, one of the friendliest lot I ever met
in BUCS! Captain Neil Rimmer gave us this: “WE did all right considering we didn’t bring a full
team”.
The proud York captain was quoted as saying “I’m happy. I’ve just bought a kitkat….also we won at
badminton!” – apparently kitkats are a form of celebration here for York badminton!
