Vision’s Sport Guide To: Netball

The University of York Netball club known as UYNC have a season to live up after last year and the girls are very much up to the task. Despite disappointment in the cup and at Roses, the UYNC 1st Team gained promotion, capping off a great season for all three teams with the 2nd and 3rd teams finishing in respectable places in their individual leagues.

After ending on such a high last year, the club is very much in a period of development looking to improve in every way possible First Team Captain Emma Loft is looking to get the best out of her players this year telling Vision; “We are excited to make a big impact next season, especially after the incredibly high-level of netball demonstrated by England in the Commonwealth Games. I want to adopt the same attitude the England squad have that you can achieve whatever you apply yourself to.”

The teams train four times a week, one of these sessions being with an external coach. An exciting addition for UYNC this season is that they shall be joined by Netball Super League (NSL) players from Yorkshire Jets for several training sessions, Loft says “The fact we are getting top players in as part of our training is only going to add a new dynamic to the club and push us forward for future success”.

The club, made up of around 30 girls, is referred to very much as a family. With training and matches being taken seriously by all the girls, they regularly socialize as a team outside of training and every Wednesday are seen joining all other teams and heading to Salvation on a Wednesday. The club also takes the time to host their own events and raise money for RAG with their annual Kits & Tinsel raffle event always being a success. Press and Publicity Officer for the club Caitlin Graham said; “The club is taking on a new image this year, along with our brand new website and social media sites being revamped we are planning to make Kits & Tinsel the biggest it has been yet, with a fantastic venue and fantastic prizes up for grabs.”

Furthermore, UYNC are also extensively creating links with the college netball system, going down to support the girls at College Varsity and through the Netball College Cup. Started last year, with two mixed University teams being added in the group stages had enormous success and plans are being made to continue this.

UYNC are certainly ready to tackle the new season and cannot wait for the new intake of freshers to come in and start the season with a bang. Speaking to York Vision club President Grace Clarke was clearly excited at the prospect of the coming year; “Continuing on the success of last year and the intake of a new, fantastic group of Freshers, UYNC has the foundations for an amazing season. I am SO excited for what next year can bring and we are going to train and work harder than ever to ensure we develop and improve to the highest standard.”

The University of York Netball Trials shall be held on Sunday 5th October (Sunday Week 1).
