Vision’s Essential Election Info

Why Should I Vote?

Voting in the YUSU elections is one of the most important times of the term. These candidates are standing to represent us, the student body, for the next academic year. This is your chance to have your say and vote for the person who you think is most suitable to the sabbatical or non-sabbatical position.

Although many of us may feel out of touch with politics, and student politics in particular, it is still vital that you don’t miss your chance to make a difference and make your opinion known.

It’s a rare opportunity to have your say in what’s going on and happening in our student union. The candidates elected will carry the student body for the next year, and we must make sure that we are represented well.

So read the Election Supplement (thoroughly!), take a look at the campaigning material and have your say!
Don’t let student apathy decide your fate, go out and vote!

How Do I Vote?

YUSU elections are run by Single Transferable Voting (STV) which means that candidates cannot get elected without at least 50% of the vote. This is why putting a second preference, third preference and so on is so important.

When you vote you are able to rank candidates in order of preference. All first preference votes are then counted. If a candidate recieves 50% of the votes or more they win. If no candidate gets over 50% the least popular candidate is eliminated and anyone who voted for them has their votes transferred to whoever they listed as their second preference.

This process of elimination and transferring continues until someone achieves more than 50%.

This also means that even if your first choice candidate does not win you still have a say in who becomes your next union officers.

All you have to do is log on to yusu.org/vote and follow the links for each candidate to help decide the fate of your union!
