vision logoYork Vision has taken the runner-up prize for Student Publication of the Year at the Guardian Student Media Awards.

Presenter and writer Rick Edwards announced the news at the 35th awards ceremony in London shortly after 8pm this evening.

Current editors Joanna Barrow and Patrick Greenfield were at the event to accept the award, alongside former editorial members Oliver Todd, Sarah Cattle, Georgina Strapp, Alex Finnis and website creator Magnus Tripp.

The coveted top gong went to Newcastle University’s The Courier – who also scooped the prize last year.

Other shortlisted contenders included the University of Oxford’s Medical School Gazette, the University of Nottingham’s Impact and the University of Exeter’s Exepose.

Meanwhile, University of York student Jonathan Roome also managed runner-up – coming second on Student Critic of the Year.

The Circulation writer was joined by Alisha Rouse from the University of Sheffield, who took Student Reporter of the Year, and by Paul Traynor, Julia Chapman and Clare Downey from City University London, who scooped Student Broadcast Journalists of the Year.

Online magazine The Student Journals took Best Student Website of the Year.

Vision Editor Barrow described how proud she was of the student newspaper. She said: “I couldn’t be prouder of York Vision and everything that they do. It’s amazing.”

Patrick Greenfield added: “I just shook Rick Edwards’ hand.”

The shortlist was decided by a panel from some of Britain’s leading newspapers, news websites and magazines including The Independent’s Senior Writer Archie Bland and the Deputy Editor of the Sunday Times Lisa Smosarski.

Despite coming second, York Vision remains the UK’s most-awarded student newspaper, having scooped a total of 22 prizes across media award outlets since 2001.

The paper was last awarded Best Publication of the Year by the Guardian in 2011.
