University officials to discuss safety as second body found in river

University officials are to meet with staff from York St John, the council and police as a second body is discovered in one of York’s rivers.

The man, who will be formally identified in the coming days, was discovered around 5pm this afternoon near the Sainsbury’s entrance on the Foss Bank along the River Foss.

The family of missing former York St John student Ben Clarkson, who has not been seen since leaving Fibbers nightclub following a night out, has been informed.

Police returned to the River Foss to search for the missing 22-year-old who was seen in Layerthorpe on March 2 at 3.40am.

They cordoned off part of the Foss Bank and Huntington Road as ambulances arrived on the scene.

University officials will now meet with those from neighbouring university York St John, members of the council and the police on Tuesday to discuss how river safety can be improved in the city.

The meeting was originally called following the death of Megan Roberts, whose body was discovered along the River Ouse earlier this month.

The 20-year-old fine arts undergraduate from York St John vanished following a night out in Popworld in January.

In response to the student’s disappearance, YUSU President Kallum Taylor unveiled a Street Angels-style NightSafe scheme aimed at helping vulnerable undergraduates and postgraduates on a night out.

Students who are affected can contact the York Nightline, who are open from 8pm-8am. You can phone, email or IM through their website or by visiting the Eric Milner White Court. You can call 01904323735 or email [email protected].
