  1. Is it me but every year I seem to get more depressed about the lack of candidates standing.

Nearly half of the positions just have one person standing for it. Roughly a third have just two candidates standing against each other. With a student population of 8000-10000 that is shocking.

  2. You raise a good point Scott. Maybe we need a new position for someone who could actually advertise the elections to people outside of the uni’s political circle.

  3. This information was on the yusu website for most of the day – does that not count as ‘getting it out’?

  4. I think it would be horrible if Mark Pickard and sidekick win the women’s officer position. Not because he is male, but because he is obviously running as a joke against a position that is just as important as any other.

  5. whatever happened to the arbitrary party duck? there doesn’t seem to be any joke candidates in it this year… probably for the best i think.

  6. The powers that be wouldn’t allow Arbitrary Party Duck stand. They weren’t ready.

  7. “This information was on the yusu website for most of the day – does that not count as ‘getting it out’?”

Could you show us the link for this please? I think you’ll find that a candidate is only confirmed if they attended the briefing at 6pm today (Monday), therefore it would be impossible that the list could have been up for ‘most of the day’. In fact they’re not even on the YUSU website now as far as I can see.

  8. Thanks for that Johnny YUSU. Although I would say that if someone of sound mind actively looking for the candidate list on the YUSU website cannot find it, then that would represent a failing on their part to publicise it.

Vision actually had this list last Friday afternoon but we have to abide by YUSU rules and had to wait till earlier this evening to release them.

  9. Shame Mr Feckelton has no social skills when it comes to working WITH people, communicating WITH people and when faced with any level of ‘confrontation’ (no matter how big or small) takes it upon himself to treat the person like a leper….great presidential candidate….the sort you can rely upon

  10. Hmm…Freckleton seems to be rather successful for someone with no social skills and an inability to deal with confrontation. Lets not make personal vendettas stand in the way of some great policies, as has already been pointed out, especially with regards to the media.

  11. it not a personal vendetta, merely bringing up certain aspects of Matthew that i feel make would make him a rather appalling president.

  12. What’s with the Freckleton hating? I’d never spoken to him before last night but he seemed like a nice enough bloke to me.

  13. Matthew: There already is a YUSU member of staff that is in charge of checking the papers.

  14. Both “Frecks” and David Levene seem to know very little about campus media and yet both have radical policies towards it.

    A few points:

    – David… Vision and Nouse would NEVER agree to give sabbs an entire page over for free just for you to promote your work. Not only is it against the Media Charter, but it would also make the papers look rubbish and they would, without a doubt, fail to win any awards ever again. If you want to pay for the publicity, in the form of an advert, then that is a different matter, but you shouldn’t just try to exploit societies for your own good – everyone else has to do their own promotion, rather than just getting Vision and Nouse to do it for them. You could never pass this policy without agreement from the papers and YUM as a whole and, seeing as they would never agree to this, this is a completely dud policy. You should scrap it straight away.

    – Matthew… I actually agree with the sentiment of what you are saying, but you don’t seem to know any of the detail. YUSU has a media lawyer who they use occasionally (he doesn’t judge “welfare” issues though). YUSU should pay him to be the only person who checks the papers for legal issues, rather than what happens at the moment which is that if there are any articles which the sabbs are unsure about, they ask him. The papers should be in contact with him and him only over legal matters.

As for welfare issues, this is a very tricky situation because of the ambiguity over what counts as a legitimate welfare reason to censor the papers. The problem is far more complicated than simply saying “give it to a 3rd party”. Personally, I think more black and white rules need to be put in the media charter, but also the rules need to become far, far more liberal for free press. At the moment the rules are very restrictive. Although it would never happen in reality, I’d like to see the “welfare” reasons for censoring the papers scrapped completely because things like harassment, bullying etc are all covered by laws. There is no need for the “welfare” reasons, they just restrict the press. YUSU needs to recognise that the papers are free press and editorially independent, but your idea of just running away from them seems like it’s not fully thought through.

  15. I was just considering voting for David Levine, but now I’ve seen he’s running for NUS delegate ASWELL as president I’m not going to. Why does he need to run for both?Ok, he may not get president but he let other people have a go..

  16. who? There are several nus delegate positions that york gets, not just one. It is just to attend a one off conference, which would make sense for him to go to particularly if he wins pres hg
