Incidents at Ziggy’s involving sports team members has “shocked” and “intimidated” fellow clubbers and staff after witnesses claimed they were stealing drinks, fighting and destroying property.

One Goodricke fresher told Vision, “I really like Ziggy’s as a club but I find some of the sports teams quite intimidating, I have friends who don’t come out on Wednesday nights because they feel inferior to them.”

One sportsperson was overheard last week declaring, “Ziggy’s is my club!”

The University’s rugby team were banned from the nightclub for two weeks following an incident last Wednesday involving players smashing glasses in the champagne lounge.

A rugby player present at the time explained, “the old guard were up for the night, and they were just flicking off stacked glasses one after the other even when the barman asked them to stop”.

On a separate occasion, it has been claimed that the sports team members were also seen stealing drinks from the stock room downstairs.

Ziggy’s issued a statement in confirmation, saying, “the rugby team has been banned from the club for two weeks following a couple of incidents that occurred on October 27.” The nightclub is currently, “looking to arrange a meeting to make sure that no further incidents occur in the future.”

The social secretary for the rugby team refused to comment when contacted.

Several fights broke out last week involving the sports teams and innocent bystanders. Last Wednesday night, a student walking home alone in the Micklegate area was attacked by a male member of a sport social. The student described how “an obviously drunk guy in shorts was walking in the opposite direction to me when he pushed me into the wall without a word of explanation. I punched him and he stumbled onto his knees and started shouting incoherent things, but I hadn’t stopped, and didn’t look back and kept walking.”

A fight also broke out that evening in the Ziggy’s basement between two members of different sports teams, reportedly due to the rivalry and resentment between them.

Students have also witnessed sports teams attacking each other verbally. One onlooker said, “A sports team kept on shouting at Netball and Cheerleading saying they weren’t real sports.”

Correction: In the print version of this article, the first paragraph failed to specify that witnesses had only claimed to see drink stealing. York Vision cannot confirm the validity of these accounts and would like to apologise for the error.

  1. This article isnt very well written, as far as i can see the rugby team we’re only involved in one incident but they article makes out that the rugby team we’re the ones who started fights downstairs, punched people in the street and told the cheerleaders they weren’t partaking in a real sport.

  2. No it doesn’t? It clearly states the difference between Rugby players actions and mysterious sports teams actions.

  3. LOL! Cheerleading is not a real sport. Its physically challenging, but it is intended to ‘cheer’ the real sports on. Also, rugby are hilarious. Wouldn’t be Ziggy’s without them.
    xxx

  4. This suberb article highlights a number of very serious issues. Persecution of cheerleaders is vile and drinking stealing socially unacceptable.

  5. I like Ziggy’s but it’d be a whole lot nicer if some of the sports teams didn’t think they owned it.

    @Saz

Actually we don’t cheer any teams on, we compete (and win!)
It seems people enjoy having these stereotypes though . . .

  6. Ziggys would be better if the staff weren’t such cocks epecially that midget girl.
