Raiders destroyed the front of a bank this morning with a digger in a dramatic episode, making off with an ATM.

The robbers dragged a cash machine from the NatWest branch and loaded it onto a flatbed truck.

Students living above the bank say they were watching The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug at the time of the break-in after spending the night out in Salvation.

Speaking exclusively to York Vision, Economics third-year student Utha Ilderton said: “A massive green digger ploughed in and out of Natwest bank beneath our house.”

“Two men with excellent handy work jumped in inside the hole and proceeded to retrieve their prize, an ATM full of cash.”

Police attended the incident at around 2:30 am, but the hooded gang had already fled the scene in a black Jaguar.

Masters student James Gibson says he initially thought the sound of the raid was his friend knocking loudly on his door.

He said: “We saw 3 guys in hooded tops, dressed all in black.

“The police came and took statements but said it was unlikely that the perpetrators would ever be caught.”

Experts were brought in this morning to assess the old building after fears of structural damage were raised following the break-in.

A Natwest spokesperson confirmed there had been an incident at the branch.

North Yorkshire Police say extensive enquires are ongoing and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

No arrests have yet been made.
