Road to Roses: Netball

The netball matches at Roses always prove to be a feisty affair and this year will be no different.

The netball 2nds team have had a super season. With the freshers of the team settling in well the team finished in 3rd place in their Northern 5B league, only missing out on 2nd place due to goal difference.

The girls have been training hard in preparation to ensure they are ready for what will be a tough match. After impressively winning their match at Varsity, the girls shall be looking to do the same against Lancaster. Watch out for the fast pace of Amy Moll on court who will be hoping to net every shot possible.

Captain Elissa Bryan in particular has had a fantastic season, securing man of the match on several occasions. Speaking to Vision ahead of Roses, she said: “Although we have a difficult game ahead, the whole team have returned this term determined to maintain our end of season performance level. Training sessions, designed to test our skill, match play and fitness, have so far proved promising with everyone showing 100% commitment.”

The netball 3rds finished an impressive 3rd in their Northern 6B league, and their intensive training is also underway, looking in good shape ahead of the match. A friendly against the Leeds Development squad will also put the girls in good stead for the match.

Captain Eliza Ackland is currently injured and may not feature at all in the match against Lancaster. No doubt she will be cheering on the tremendous thirds from the side lines.  With a solid defence and fluid attacking play, all the girls will be fighting for a win.

The thirds finished their season on a high with a string of wins, convincingly beating their toughest opponents Sheffield in their final match. Speaking ahead of the match, Ackland said: “If we play as well as we were playing at the end of last term we have a real chance of winning. We just have to make the most of the training sessions we’ve got.”

The 3rds will be kicking off the university netball matches in Roses at 12.30 on Sunday in the tent, and hopefully with a win can set the momentum for the other netball teams. The 2nds follow them at 14:30.
