Preview: Fear of Music

What made you want to put on a night? Although there’s been a load of student-led clubinghts on in the past year, there’s not really much variety outside of House and R&B. On a night out around Christmas last year some friends suggested we start a new night; it’s pretty much been developed on nights out – which is quite appropriate, I guess.
How does your night differ/exceed other York club nights? We play the music others fear playing. And that really isn’t just a tagline. Where else can you go to hear Donna Summer, LCD Soundsystem and Bananarama all on the same night?
What music can we expect? Disco, electro and synthpop. Late ‘70s disco stuff right through to more modern synth/electro like Hot Chip. I’m half regretting putting ‘synthpop’ on the flyers because quite a few peope don’t really know what I’m referring to – think The Human League, Neon Neon, Pet Shop Boys, that kind of thing.
Are there good drinks deals? Everything’s pretty cheap: Carlsberg/vodka £1.80 etc.
Is this an egotistical power trip or an attempt to put on a bumping good time? I want it to feel like a party. Good music, nice people, cheap drinks. What I really wanted was to detach any kind of group or face from the night. Taking the idea from the Talking Heads (where the inspiration for name came from), where they strip everything back and let the music take centre stage.
Why the 80s? Why not? I’ve always loved ‘80s music – even the shamelessly cheesy stuff is brilliant. That said, we’ll be steering clear of Willow territory. The ‘80s is such a great period of music, a real melting pot of genres – and of course, the reign of disco.
Is this part of the 2013 Disco revival? The revival of disco over the summer was great. Daft Punk and Nile Rodgers probably helped, but even the lesser known stuff is getting the attention it deserves now. I guess this is kind of riding on the back of that, but hopefully this will be more than just a phase.
Cher or Madonna? Madonna, of course. She is ridiculous at times but has some really good songs under that tight fitting belt of hers. I defy anyone not to dance when ‘Into The Groove’ comes on.
Parting words? It’s really hard not to sound like a massive dick when you’re talking about a clubnight.
