THE FIRST ever York Student Market is set to be held this term.
The student-run bazaar is the brainchild of York’s own Richard O’Neil, Matthew Freckelton and Scott Murphy, who say that they want the project to “make the campus a better and more exciting place.”
The trio, who are all keen members of York’s prize-winning Entrepreneur Society, put together their combined experience to come up with a business plan for the venture.
They then took their idea to Yorkshire Forward, an agency which provides funding to any student who has an original business concept.
Their plan is for a number of enterprising students to run stalls alongside many other services which will be available on the day.
Everything from shoe-shining to manicures will be on offer from over 26 outlets.
However, the founders have stressed that they are not wholly interested in making money for themselves and will donate a quarter of the profits back into the University.
YUSU President and fellow entrepreneur Tim Ngwena believes the idea is “a perfect reflection of York’s students.”
“It’s great that students are going out on their own – especially in this economic climate”, he explained, although he added: “the entyerprise does conflict with certain areas of the Union.”
The idea has also proved popular amongst students, with one Goodricke Fresher enthusing:
“In this economic climate it’s a great opportunity to make money by selling stuff, plus the chance to pick up some bargains!”
York Student Market will be held on Wednesday Week 4 in James College Dining Hall, between 10am and 6pm.
This is great news – not only does James College finally get a bar but now it also gets a market on its doorstep! Can’t wait!
I thought YUSU used to run Student Markets in Goodricke Old Dining Hall. Quality fact checking as ever, Vision.
Sam, York Student Market is a company. So it is the first time they have set up…
