Little Black Book Of York: Il Paradiso

WhatNice italian food on the cheap

Where: Walmgate

Price: Cheap as chips

Yeah, it got a bad food hygiene rating, but the food here is so good and well-priced that that doesn’t matter.

It’s situated on Walmgate and isn’t much to look at from the outside- or from the inside for that matter-but they have a student deal where you can get an alcoholic drink and any pizza or pasta for £7.50.

The staff are friendly, if sometimes a bit lecherous, but it is great for a laid-back dinner. If you have cash to burn, I’d recommend getting a few little plates of their antipasti to share, like Italian tapas. Wash down with some well-priced wine then finish with nutella cheesecake.

I am convinced the place is run by the Mafia because they don’t take card, so come armed with cash.  It’s a true gem, and it really has a homey feel.

It actually does feel a bit like being in a shabby restaurant in Italy, and the food truly is fantastic, it’s not just your standard pizza and pasta, they do beautiful things with baby squid, aubergines and apparently meat too.

It would make a good first date venue, or is just a good place to catch up with your galdem.
