Langwith Thump Dismal Wentworth

Langwith 6 - 0 Wentworth

Whilst this clash between College football’s perennial whipping boys may not have had Vision’s sport contributors clambering for the chance to cover it, it did not disappoint on the goal front. Unfortunately for the neutral, and for Wentworth, they were all at one end.

Having held an under achieving Vanbrugh side to a draw last weekend, Wentworth could have been forgiven for viewing this game as having the potential to yield a result. Also, encouragingly the men in purple settled into a rhythm quicker than their erratically attired opponents. However the closest Wentworth came to breaking the deadlock was a free kick from over 30 yards out that the Langwith stopper comfortably pushed over the bar.

With twenty minutes on the clock Langwith began to find their feet and soon took the lead, as Captain Bruce Starkey (not a character from Star Trek) finished off a sweeping move with a cool finish from just inside the area. The diminutive Starkey proved to be the star turn from here on in, as he propelled Langwith into a three goal half time lead with two more stunning strikes. The first of these was an absolute peach- having skilfully evaded two hapless defenders he unleashed a thumping drive into the top right hand corner. If this ranked as the day’s finest goal then Starkey’s third was not far behind – an equally thunderous effort that left Wentworth’s beleaguered Goalkeeper with no chance

And if the comfortable half time lead somewhat flattered Langwith then the three more goals they added in the second half most certainly did not, as a demoralised Wentworth capitulated under a sustained spell of pressure, conceding three goals in just ten minutes. Starkey turned provider for the fourth as a teasing cross was beautifully glanced into the far corner, before a dubious fifth goal took Langwith out of sight.

This result, completed by a skillful finish from Liam Condron, will give Langwith a much needed confidence boost ahead some far more difficult games, but leaves Wentworth contemplating another season at the foot of the College Football League.

  1. Condron…not Conran, but i like that my scrambled goal has now become a fine piece of skill and moved forward chronologically from 6th to 5th. x
