Kitchen fire chaos to last months

CHAOS: Damage caused by faulty toaster

CHAOS CAUSED from the kitchen fire in Derwent last Monday may not be repaired until after Christmas, students have been told.

Photos taken exclusively for Vision show the extent of the damage caused after a faulty toaster went up in flames. Students were evacuated from Derwent A Block as fire fighters controlled the blaze.

The toaster had not been repaired because porters were not available when a student tried to report it.

A 1st Year student told Vision: “we have been told that the kitchen will be out of action probably till after Christmas.”

“The kitchen was the only one with a table and chairs – we have to eat in our own rooms now. Even though we have spread out to the other kitchens there are still too many in the nearest kitchen.”

Students were allowed into the kitchen on Monday evening to collect any personal belongings that weren’t damaged in the fire.
