Relief is at hand for hungry students on the Heslington East campus as a new supermarket is set to replace the B&Q on Hull Road.

Happily, DIY fans’ loss is your stomach’s gain, as the new store boasts an impressive 60,000 square feet of sales space, meaning there’ll be plenty of room for your daily dose of artisanal ciabatta and pimento stuffed olives.

The announcement that Sainsbury’s is planning on opening will come as welcome news to the residents of Goodricke and Langwith who do not have easy access to groceries near their campus.

The inhabitants of Heslington East will be able to shop for themselves as easily as their peers on the Hes West campus, and can rest easy knowing that they have the means to prevent an outbreak of Scurvy on campus.

Bruno Moore, head of town planning for Sainsbury’s, said: “We’re delighted that this opportunity has opened up to us and we are looking forward to the possibility of opening a new store in York and playing a big role in the local community.”Chris King, a second year Goodricke student is delighted by the news, “Shopping online was such a pain, I’m so glad there’ll be an easily accessible supermarket for students on Hes East at last!”
