GSA Elections- Wang Elected President

untitledYuan Wang has been elected president of the Graduate Students Association (GSA) unopposed, in what was a largely uncompetitive election with four of the 6 positions uncontested.

Wang, who aims in his manifesto to strengthen cooperation between GSA officers, to improve the overall efficiency of the association, as well as to continue to work for the improved integration of postgraduate students into the University community beat out Ron by a narrow 95 votes to 70. In comparison, last year’s election attracted 3 candidates for the Presidents role with 365 votes cast and four of the six positions were contested. 342 postgraduates voted  in the most recent YUSU elections.

In the two contested elections Rosa Kit Wan Kwok comfortably beat Jenny Michel and Daria Pawlowska for the position of Welfare Officer. Pawlowska late beat Wang for the position of student trustee, but this was a moot point as Wang had been eliminated from the running after being elected President earlier in the evening.

In the four uncontested elections Xiaoyin Yang was elected Academic Officer, Kevin Elphick Services Officer and Tian Tian was elected Finance and Community Officer.

The GSA represents the graduate student body at York who make up over a quarter of the total student community. As well as providing a social community for postgraduates they are also present representing the views of postgraduates on a variety of student committees as well as providing academic advice and welfare support.
