2,500 wristbands entitling free shots throughout November are to be provided to Alcuin, Derwent and James colleges after a drinks offer advertised as part of their Freshers’ Week tickets proved itself as too good to be true.

Freshers brought the wristbands with a promise from their JCRCs of a free shot at the bars in Tokyo and Fibbers upon each visit until the end of October.

However, staff at both clubs were largely unaware of the deal which lead to many wristband wearers not receiving their shots.

Fergus Redsall, a Psychology student at Derwent told Vision that, “at Fibbers, the barman flatly refused and at Tokyo we were sent to all the different bars until a persistent friend spoke to a manager. They made it very difficult.”

A number of students have confirmed having similar experiences.

In a statement to Vision, a spokeswoman from Tokyo Industries revealed their resolve, saying that “As a gesture of good will, we’ll [sic] be instating and offering the free shot promotion throughout November.

“2,500 ‘free shot in November’ wristbands are being produced now and will be distributed amongst the colleges.”
She explained that the conditions of claiming the free shot would be the same as those advertised to freshers for October before they came to university.

Clarifying Tokyo Industries’ stance with regard to their dealings with the JCRCs, the spokesperson said: “there appears to have been an unfortunate misunderstanding, the free shots offer had been discussed but not finally confirmed.”

She added: “We apologise unreservedly for any disappointment this may have unwittingly caused.”

Holly Burton, Chair of the Derwent JCRC contended with the sentiment that the offer had not been “finally confirmed.”
She told Vision, “[the deal] was confirmed in early October when the wristbands were ready to be collected and I was reminded again via email that the wearer would get the free shot.”

Alcuin JCRC Chair Ollie Todd echoed similar sentiments, though with some reservations.

Todd was at pains to stress, “I am certain this was unintentional. Tokyo have been extremely student friendly and have consistently run nights where entry has been free for students.”

Although Tokyo Industries has not confirmed a date, they made it clear that the wristbands will be made available “very soon”.
