Female Freshers’ Fashion – What to Wear

Reinvention, reinvention, reinvention. This is the word that will be rattling about for all those new to the bright, gleaming world of university. Say goodbye to your home-town self and hello to the brand new you. Freshers’ Week is an excellent crash-course in exploring your new university home. And with freshers’ events, there are many opportunities to dress up or dress down for the occasion.

So I have put together some outfits for York’s staple Freshers’ events…

The Traffic Light Party

This is a very efficient dress code, where the colour you wear indicates your availability to possible suitors – red means you are taken, yellow means you’re undecided and green means you are single.

Or if you’re feeling mysterious, wear all-black and keep ’em guessing!

The Foam Party

Do not make the heinous mistake of donning your best clothes to a foam party as they will get ruined beyond repair. Waterproof make-up and swimwear underneath will keep you looking fresh and dignified. Team a casual look with flat shoes (slippery floor with high heels is a recipe for A&E disaster!) for a great night out.

The School Night

A perennial favourite for Freshers’ week, most will wear their old school shirt and tie. However, if you absolutely hated your old school uniform or if you were one of the lucky lot that didn’t have one, keep it chic with a classy school-like outfit.

The Pyjama Party

You might be inclined towards an animal onesie for this theme. By all means, go for it. For this look, I selected an outfit that are separate pieces so it’s easy to get out of (think of those toilet breaks) and not heavy as you dance the night away.

The Closing Ceremony – YUSU Live and Loud 2013

This is YUSU’s main event to officially welcome you to the uni. Taking place at the new campus on Heslington East, there is a non-formal, festival theme to the event. Rather than going for full-on festival, I picked out a more casual look that works well from day to night.
