Welfare and Community Officer candidates have been challenged over their current lack of attendance at Liberation and Welfare Committee meetings.

An audience member attacked office-seekers Grace Winpenny, Beth Campbell and Jemima Busby over their attendance records at the events.

Second-year philosophy student Helena Horton asked: “Are any of you involved in liberation and welfare committees? If not, why are you running?”

Finding the question difficult to answer, it emerged that the trio are not currently involved in the committee meetings.

But candidates Beth and Jemima did attend the meetings in their role of Vice-Chair Welfare for Alcuin and Female Welfare for Langwith respectively.

Audience members took to Twitter to say that not currently being part of a committee does not mean you know “nothing” about welfare.

The candidates were speaking at the Roger Kirk Centre on the opening night of campaigning in the latest student union elections.

Voters will go to the polls during Week 8 to decide their YUSU team for 2014.

The results will be announced on Friday 28 February.
