Earthquake Shakes Up York

York experienced its first earthquake in over two years at around 9pm tonight. The quake was centred in Ripon, close to the Yorkshire Dales, but has reportedly also been felt in Riccall, Cumbria and Manchester. It measured 3.7 on the Richter scale, meaning it is described as a minor quake that is “often felt” but “rarely causes damage”.

Second year History student Darren Webb is in York and experienced the tremour first hand. He commented that: “Having just moved back into my house in York alone after the Christmas holidays, I was suddenly disturbed by a strange noise and movement. My initial fears were that someone was intentionally breaking into the house. However I couldn’t see any evidence of this but I was still uneasy however my nerves were calmed after seeing reports on Facebook and Twitter almost instantly. How useful social media has become.”

A number of concerned Yorkshire residents contacted the police following the quake, but there have so far been no reports of injuries or property damage.
