A terrific display by a dominant Derwent side saw them storm to a convincing 6-0 win over Alcuin in college hockey, to start their season off in style.
Fluid passing and skilful dribbling allowed Derwent to dominate possession, and despite some diligent defending by Alcuin, their opponents deservedly opened the scoring midway through the first half in controversial fashion. Everybody stopped after a Derwent player slipped at the top of the D and an infringement was suspected, and a Derwent forward pounced to hand his side the lead, angering the Alcuin defence.
On the stroke of half time, Derwent doubled their lead from a short corner, all but sealing the result as Alcuin had been forced to withstand heavy pressure and barely ventured out of their own half.
The momentum failed to shift in the second half, as Derwent continued their onslaught on the Alcuin goal, with Chris Daniel orchestrating play from the back, whilst Jack Bradshaw and Rachel Brooke threatened down the flanks.
Four further goals followed, including another controversial last minute short corner, meaning that Derwent strolled to a 6-0 win, whilst an Alcuin side which was missin a host of key University players slipped to their first defeat of the season.
Goodricke and Langwith meanwhile played out a competitive 1-1 draw in sunny conditions on Sunday morning, whilst the game between Halifax and James has been rearranged for next Sunday, after both teams struggled to field sides.
