Derwent Fire Drama

By Milana Knezevic

FIRE FIGHTERS raced to Derwent today to battle with a fire in a student kitchen.

Derwent A Block was badly damaged after appliances caught alight on the third floor. The sight of fire engines greeted students coming out of lectures in Derwent and Langwith.

Sources suggest that the fire started from a toaster and quickly spread to the rest of the area. Students were evacuated out of the premises in time before anyone was injured by the fire. One side of the kitchen, however, was badly damaged with walls blackened by the flames.

Some Derwent residents have already argued that this incident is further proof of the importance of the porters who helped resolve the situation.

Between around 4pm until 11 this evening students are being allowed back into the area to collect any belongings which have been unharmed by the fire. The process of evaluating the damage and the insurance claim will then begin, before the rebuilding of the kitchen can start.

Derwent students were evacuated after a fire only last May after a suspected arson attack by D Block.
