College Sport: Heavy rain leads to more cancellations

More College Sport fixtures were called off on Sunday as waterlogged pitches rendered several matches unplayable.

Overnight rainfall followed by relentless morning showers ensured that no football and rugby matches are set to go ahead on 22 Acres. The matches were called off at around 09:00 this morning, following pitch inspections by the College Sport Officers.

For the second weekend running, the weather played its part in the cancellation of several games set to be played on 22 Acres, as last week’s heavy frost reduced the college football fixture list to just two viable matches.

The cancellations mean that the college sport calendar becomes increasingly congested, particularly with the inaugural College Varsity and Qualifiers weekend taking place later in the Spring term.

Sunday’s college hockey and college netball matches remain scheduled to go ahead on the JLD and in the Tent respectively, as does college badminton. Tonight’s college rowing event, held in the Roger Kirk Centre, is also unaffected.

Elsewhere, in college football, the Hes East derby between Langwith and Goodricke is among those called off, along with James v. Halifax, Alcuin v. Derwent, and Vanbrugh v. Wentworth.

On the disruption to the fixture list, College Sport Officer Dave Washington said: “Sadly there’s nothing we can do about the weather, and we’ll just have to hope that it improves over the next few weeks.

It’s putting increased pressure on an already-packed schedule. We’ll do our very best to ensure that all games are completed.”
