College Profile: Goodricke

Since opening in 1968 Goodricke has gone on to great things. It is now one of two colleges on the Hes East Campus, its neighbour being Langwith. Boasting some of the best accommodation the university has to offer it is popular with many. Its three courts surround the Goodricke Nucleus. No longer so isolated from Hes West, there is a regular free bus service to and from each campus and walking it’s only a short distance. It’s also very close to the new sports centre which have top of the art facilities. There is a clear social aspect in Goodricke with regular events taking place, including its summer festival of ‘GoodFest’ not to be missed by any standard.

The Stats: 39, 41 and 51 week lets priced at £117 – £123 per week for self-catered rooms. Studio flats are available for £149 per week

1) Why did you pick your college?
Because it was the better/newer accommodation. Also, it was on the campus where my course was based.

2) What are its distinguishing features?
The smiley face, a lovely communal outside area with BBQ’s/social area.

3) What’s the accommodation like?
Modern, a great size with 12 people per kitchen and all rooms with ensuites.

4) Sum up your college in 3 words.
Modern. Pioneering. Inclusive.

5) Best thing about the college?
Fun and lively without the constant hustle and bustle of the main campus.

6) Worst thing about the college?
Can be quite isolated at times, leading to untrue ‘banter’ about the college.

7) Describe a typical student in your college.
Chatty, welcoming, game for nights out and fun to be around.

8) A college member is most likely to say:
Wanna go Sainsbury’s? Revs anyone? Film in the JCR? Glasshouse?

9) A college member is least likely to say:
I hate sharing a bathroom. I love the 9am fire alarm on a Monday morning. Having an extra single bed is so annoying.

10) What do you wish you had known as a fresher?
To make other friends than your flat. Use freshers to socialise as much as possible because 1st year doesn’t count. Get to know 2nd/3rd years.

11) What is your biggest fresher memory/regret?
That freshers year as a whole was just superb.

  1. Never has Goodricke been described as pioneering or inclusive. We can all tell who spoon fed who those words

  2. If Goodrickers would be likely to say glasshouse, how come their quiz is so poorly attended.

  3. “Pioneering, inclusive and fun” are not words that can be used to describe either Dean Hickey, the Goodricke JCR or its welfare team. Goodicke has nothing to offer but overpriced accommodation and a poor college experience.
