Yesterday Langwith secured a 6-1 win against a valiant Alcuin side. Langwith were in high spirits having already beaten Halifax earlier in the day and were desperate to continue on their winning streak. Langwith were sporting a new team and although the score does not quite reflect the game, they worked hard together to overcome Alcuin.
Despite maintaining a large percentage of possession, Alcuin were missing some of their key players, and were unable to break through the strong Langwith defence marshalled by Andrew Lister who consistently deflected shots out of the D. Katie Penrose and Ruth Mason were constantly threatening Langwith their skillful dribbling, but they couldn’t find an end product.
The scoring was opened by Langwith’s Mike Dunnett-Stone. Having received the ball from a superb Matthew Noble cross, who had brought it down to Alcuin’s goal from the halfway line, he knocked it home from a yard out.
Just before half time, Charlie Williams scored Langwith’s second of the afternoon after a pass into the D from Steve Le Cornu.
After the break, Langwith went from strength to strength, making more accurate passes and creating space through movement. Alcuin fought hard but couldn’t stop Langwith’s third goal from passing the line, the author of this one Steve Le Cornu.
Williams scored his second goal of the match soon after, this one the most impressive of the game. He won the ball from an Alcuin player at the halfway line and proceeded to dribble it around a further three before hammering the ball into the goal. Langwith were in their element after a poor result in last year’s league and were determined to succeed in a win.
Indeed of the two sides Alcuin were passing the ball better and having more possession, but their inability to defend meant that Langwith scored virtually every time they had a meaningful attack, with Williams orchestrating the majority of them.
Following an Alcuin long corner and some precise passing, Alcuin captain Dave Washington received the ball on the right inside the D and hit it on the reverse side bringing the score to 4-1. But that was to be the only goal Langwith allowed past them and they proceeded to score two more, one hit in by Matthew Noble and one by Steve Le Cornu, having received the ball from Jessica Paisley.
As the final whistle blew, Langwith were ecstatic after a fantastic weekend of hockey. The only question is: will they be able to keep it up for the rest of the season? Watch this space.
