Vanbrugh 2’s worked very hard to secure a 1-0 victory over opponents Alcuin 3’s in a highly contested game marred by terrible downpour and even thunder and lightning.

On a saturated Astroturf pitch on the JLD (if that was even possible) both teams struggled to find their rhythm in the first half and not a single shot trouble either Williams in the Vanbrugh goal nor his opposite Michael T in the Alcuin goal.

The first shot came in the second half but was easily saved as it swerved straight into the Vanbrugh goalkeeper’s hands.

Soon after Williams was again straight back in the action making a brilliant save. Though the Vanbrugh players had their hearts in their mouths when he can out to meet a long ball over the top of the defence only to fumble it, the Alcuin striker failed to capitalise on the keeper’s error and placed his shot well wide.

Frazer Page really felt he should have scored there and soon regretted missing when just as thunder struck in the distance so did Vanbrugh, the Vanbrugh full back crust on the half way lobbed the Alcuin keeper who just managed to get his finger tips to it but was not able to stop it hitting to crossbar and go in.

Vanbrugh 2’s remain level on points with James 1’s but will probably struggle to make up the goal difference after James’s emphatic 12-0 win over Goodricke 3’s earlier in the afternoon.

MOTM: T. Williams

  1. The ball didn’t ‘hit the crossbar and go in’…. It hit the crossbar, bounced out and was headed in by an offside player. Another shocking refereeing decision ruins a team’s college cup. Abysmal.
