Derwent 1sts brushed aside Goodricke 2nds this afternoon on the JLD to set up a winner-takes-all encounter with James 2nds next week.
It leaves Goodricke 5th in Group D and out of contention for the Plate, only off the bottom because of Langwith 3rds’ two point deduction for not providing a referee for a game earlier this week. They need to avoid defeat to Langwith when the two teams clash next Friday in order to make it into the Vase.
Derwent didn’t seem to be at full throttle in today’s encounter, but they had more than enough to defeat their opponents. Goodricke were restricted to low-percentage shots, and latching on to defensive lapses.
It was one such lapse which gave Goodricke hope early on. A stray back pass nearly didn’t make it to Derwent keeper Frank Woodcock, but he slid in to clear just ahead of the onrushing attackers.
In the tenth minute Derwent should have taken the lead. A sumptuous ball over the top of the defense set up Jamie Trant, who did well to hit the bouncing ball first time and force a terrific reaction save from Noel Rogers in goal for Goodricke.
The rebound fell to Joe Easter, but Trant’s momentum had seen him follow-through into the goal-mouth and he managed to get in the way of Easter’s goal-bound shot with his hands, though he would surely have been given offside anyway.
That let-off was soon put to rights, though, as Mirhire Overo-Tarimo struck one of the goals of the tournament. He received the ball on the inside left, 25 yards from goal, and struck a shot with the outside of his left boot which curled away from the stranded Rodgers and into the top corner of the net.
Derwent started to consolidate after taking the lead. They didn’t particularly threaten the Goodricke goal for the ensuing period, but the men in green were restricted to a single Joe Mann shot from range which was scuffed wide.
Then on the stroke of half-time their lead was doubled in peculiar fashion. Captain Ollie Harrison’s shot from distance was well saved by Noel Rogers. Harrison jogged over to take the ensuing corner which he curled inside the far post, the Goodricke defence rooted to the spot.
The second half was pretty much all Derwent. After nine minutes Dan Atherton headed in after a free-kick, but the referee gave him offside. Then from a similar situation, Derwent took a 3-0 lead. Harrison grabbed his second with a flicked header from Tom Brandreth’s free kick. Despite being on a hat-trick, Harrison immediately subbed himself off.
Three minutes later and it was four. Joe Easter was in acres of space on the right and his pin-point cross found Atherton on a run at the back-post in the otherwise almost empty area. Atherton headed powerfully into the net, his momentum taking him into the goal and through the back of the net.
The game cantered to its conclusion now that Derwent had their unassailable lead. Goodricke had no answer for Derwent’s well regimented play and the 4-0 final score was a fair reflection of the balance of play on the day.
