BUCS netball: York 3rds 45-18 York St John 2nds

York stayed strong in a match in which players were moved around midway through to win convincingly 45-18 over bottom of the league York St. Johns.

York started strong, turning the first centre. The positive play continued with great play into the circle along with a strong defence. Despite a few stray balls towards the end, York began to create the lead which they would go on to sustain and the quarter finished 11-7.

York carried on the positive play. Becky Coomber dominated the centre court and linked lovely with wing attack Jane Robertson.

The defence of Rachel Bunce and Emily Turpin took numerous rebounds, setting off the play for several turnovers.

However, shortly before the end of the second quarter, Captain, Eliza Ackland went over on her ankle and had to come off court.With players moved around York’s play was now disrupted and St. John capitalized on this scoring two goals straight away when the game re started. The quarter ended with York still convincingly ahead at 22-10.

York settled into the third quarter well, with Caitlin Graham working hard with new partner Bunce, who was putting in some fantastic shots.

Rachel Turner continued her great play at wing defence with many interceptions and brilliant linking play with Coomber. York was dominating the game as if they were playing at home. The quarter ended 31-15.

The final quarter was York’s best in terms of scoring. The defence of Emily Turpin and Mel Okuneye kept St. John so quiet they only scored two goals.

Caitlin Graham was moving round the circle well and converting her shots. With Ackland cheering on from the side-lines, York seemed unstoppable and the game ended 45 – 18.

Captain Ackland commented after the game: “This was such a good result as we got more than double their goals. The team are playing so well at the moment and I’m really proud of everyone, especially in the way everyone coped with the switch up when I got injured.” Let’s hope the girls can win their final game of the season.
