Mike Anstey, YUSU International Officer and International Student Association President, has resigned from his position in YUSU.
In a YUSU blog, Anstey stated: “It would be hypocritical and unfair for me to keep my position, as I previously dressed up as various characters of other races, including Kony, for which I changed the colour of my skin to look like someone of a different race. As a BME student myself, I didn’t understand at the time why this was not acceptable, and how that particular costume was distasteful. Following recent campus events, I now appreciate the gravity of the situation and having discussed this issue with many of those I represent, I have realised that many of them hold different beliefs to me, which has made me feel I can no longer represent them effectively.”
This news comes after the York Vision exclusive earlier this week, revealing that 4 students ‘blacked up’ for Halloween. There have been several ‘blacking up’ controversies in the United Kingdom this year.
