The cue sports season has finished for another year and the pool and snooker club have ended with a century of BUCS points for the second year running. They finished with 103 points improving on their previous season by 2 points and have contributed nearly one sixth of the university’s current BUCS total; standing at 625.5 points to date.
They started their season by winning the 9-ball championships and finishing runner up in the trophy. In the individuals competition York also had one losing semi-finalist and one finalist. Although not currently a BUCS event, it bodes well for next year as it looks increasingly likely that it will become one and had it been, would have added another 83 points to the club’s total.
Next on the calendar was the BUCS pool competition where the 1st team were unlucky to lose to a strong Portsmouth team in the final and the 2nds lost in the semis to eventual trophy winners Cardiff 1sts.
Finally it was the snooker competition where both the 1st and 2nd teams put up strong performances, progressing relatively comfortably to the final in both competitions. It turned out to not be York’s day as Queen’s Belfast 1sts got the better of York 1sts in the deciding match, and Imperial 1sts won on the pink in the deciding frame against York 2nds.
Roses was a mixed affair, the team was heavily decimated due to exams and it showed in the pool as York lost in both the men’s and the women’s events. However, York pulled through in the snooker to beat the Lancaster team 3-2 despite 9 of the top 12 York players being unable to attend.
In addition to these accomplishments, squad manager Michael Walsh captained the England universities snooker squad to a win in the home nations competition and also played a vital role in the winning England home nations pool team.
All in all, it was a season where York finally broke through as the team to beat at the tournaments finally taking over the mantle from Warwick who have dominated over the last few years.
