Corsages and Cravats

The Summer Ball, whether you’re attending the campus-wide extravaganza or one of the smaller College offerings, provides the York University student with one of few opportunities to get properly dressed up without fear of being drenched in sweat, smeared with blue face paint by some random ‘smurf,’ and/or touched inappropriately by a charming local. At least for the first, extremely civilized, two and half hours before The Willow beckons. So let’s make the most of it.

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock/ have day-to-day concerns that transcend the reading of fashion blogs and magazines, you will be aware that Maxi Dresses are making a comeback. Take inspiration from Chloe’s collection and go Grecian or opt for jewel like shades evocative of Hollywood glamour. For a versatile look, choose a seventies style piece with a swirling print, perfect to dress down with sandals during the day. The stunning piece by Kate Moss for Topshop somehow manages to tick all the above boxes whilst still remaining elegant – an ethereal fabric, glamorous cut and subtle, vintage inspired print make it a sure win.

Asos.com is also a good bet, with 179 different styles available on my last, very recent, check. Sticking with the traditional cocktail number? While the high street is awash with cute dresses perfect for a summer occasion, it may be worthwhile hunting for something a little more unusual. After all, nothing’s worse than spending half a day getting ready only to turn up and find some bitch wearing your dress. A quick browse on eBay, keywords ‘Vintage Prom Dress,’ unearthed a multitude of one-off beauties: from glitzy 80’s body-con pieces, to extravagant, full skirted, 50’s dresses. Accessory-wise, fascinators, once the preserve of Ascot-goers and slightly uncomfortable looking summer-wedding guests, are enjoying a bit of a renaissance. Topshop have a huge selection of extravagant, be-feathered headbands, mostly all under ten pounds. Or, for something special, return to Asos.com. My pick of their extensive collection is this 20’s inspired piece.

And for guys . . . accessories are the best way to add personality to a rented suit. Unfortunately, the ‘classic’ converse sneakers and suit combo is no longer witty and irreverent after year 11. It’s time to invest in a decent pair of shoes; brogues are ideal and will last for years. While the traditional penguin suit and bow tie is a safe option, well chosen accents can give your look individual flair. Vintage cravats are easy to find and often rather beautiful – go for a paisley print in rich, dark tones. Maybe even hunt out a complimentary waistcoat while you’re at it and boom: vintage, formal (admittedly a little dandy-esque) chic.
