The University of York has placed as the top UK university in the Times Higher Education (THE) ‘100 Under 50 universities’ rankings.
In the second year of the rankings, York retains its place as the UK’s top young university – finishing in seventh place worldwide, an improvement of one position on the 2012 rankings. York is the only UK university placed in the top 10.
The table seeks to provide a representation of the up and coming universities around the world, who were established in the last fifty years. It uses the same 13 separate indicators as the World University Rankings, but has been re-calibrated to include a more characteristically accurate analysis of younger universities, with less focus on academic reputation, it claims to show the universities who have the most potential for the future.
Other British universities making into the table include Warwick at 13th, York rivals Lancaster in 14th, the University of East Anglia at 16th and the University of Essex at 29rd.
Vice-Chancellor Brian Cantor said: “We are delighted that Times Higher Education 100 under 50 league table has recognised, for the second year running, our world-leading strengths in teaching, research and knowledge transfer activities.
“In our 50th anniversary year, this is a wonderful reflection of the University’s world-wide impact. Our success stems from the tremendous hard work, dedication and ability of all our staff and students over many years.”
Although the University turned 50 this year, THE includes universities up until the year they turn 51. If this is the last year York will be included.
I love it how the university management is quick do discredit ranking systems as biased, broken and misrepresentative when they are showing us plunging down the tables, but as soon as something good is said their tone changes quickly!
anyway, its good to see the uni doing well.
York Uni isn’t doing well because York doesn’t believe in league tables, remember? So therefore, by that logic the league tables must be wrong.
Plus, we all know that Oxford and Cambridge are on top, with LSE, Kings and UCL in third place. All the other universities including York are inconsequential.
Isn’t the university celebrating it’s 50 year anniversary… this year. So as of next year there will be even less ‘league table success’.

York is still competing with universities under 50? A big fish in a small pond. That’s like a 50 year old competing with a 12 year old, obviously the 50 year old will outsmart the 12 year old. York could never compete with 300 year old plus universities.
