Student Activities Candidates

Rachel Hesselwood

HesslewoodVanbrugh

Hesselwood has expressed her current links with Student Activities already, having been YUSU Volunteering Officer for the past year. Outside of York, she has played an active part in Girl Guiding UK, and has strong volunteering links.Hesselwood aims to use the personal approach on her campaign, as she wants to meet as many students as possible. She also has a theme of ‘Superhero’, telling Vison, “See me in Ziggys dressed up!” Hesselwood does not plan to run for a second year, even though her policies such as “funding a society start-up fund” and “new areas for society stalls” are impressive. “Never say never, though” she concluded.

MalkingLuke Malkin

Vanbrugh

Malkin is arguably the most experienced of the four, chairing popular society DanceSport and being current Union Council Ordinary member. His campaign, circling around his ‘Lucky 7’ policies, is strong, with the third year linguist proving serious in his elections approach. Malkin hopes that voters will not “just vote on the name that they recognise” and choose him for his policies which include ‘establishing better communications with the Career Service’ and ‘creating more storage space on campus for societies’. Again, like his fellow campaigners, does not plan to run a second year, telling Vision, “the student population is always rolling, and so should YUSU sabbs.

ScalettNick Scarlett

Halifax

Scarlett has so far flooded campus with his campaign, and has drummed up a big Halifax following. His policies include ‘student development creating a ‘Summer Oppertunities Fair” and increase the prominence of RAG in colleges’. The third year English and History student has had relevant experience that will benefit the role, such as acting RAG Liasons Officer and playing an active role in Kids Club. The Cheesy Pop Soc member has not considered running for a second year, and believes that the run for Student Activities Officer this year “is a very even race – the other three all bring very different strengths to the table”.

UnsworthKaty Unsworth

Alcuin

Unsworth, former Alcuin RAG rep and RAG Officer, understands that she has less experience than her competitors; although the third year sociologist should not be under-estimated. She played a prominent part in the ‘Save B Henrys’ campaign and feels that her volunteering experience will help her win her campaign. “I plan to utilise my chattiness and smiley-ness” she told Vision, as she pushes her policies of ‘insuring Woodstock as a RAG event’ and ‘increasing the awareness of societies’. Unsworth does not see herself running for a second year if she is elected, but she believes that the role would supply her with “an amazing experience”
