Welfare Candidates

Bo-bear

Laura Bo

Vanbrugh

Bo has been active in the Vanburgh JCRC in her first two years. As Vice-Chair her duties included overlooking college welfare. She aims to focus on student’s personal development and hopes to incorporate supervisors and the career’s service in the process. She wants to work with the Ents reps in promoting sexual health, through among other things, giving out sexual health “goodie bags” at events. Bo also hopes to continue the SKINT and de-stress campaigns which were started by YUSU last year. Bo is seen by many as the underdog in this race, and it is true that many of her policies are already in place. However, evidence suggests that she would be a very approachable officer, a definite positive for Welfare.

AndrewAndrew McIlwraith

Goodricke

Despite the fact that McIlwraith has confirmed that his friends nominated him for the position of Welfare Officer as a joke, he refuses to pull out of the race, stating that if people want to make a political statement about YUSU elections being a popularity contest in his name, he is not going to stop them. Subsequently, he has faced criticism from his opponents who argue that he should drop out if he is not serious about taking on the position were he actually to be elected. McIlwraith defended himself in the face of this criticism by saying he hasn’t actually done anything and can thus not be blamed.

PeterPeter Warner-Medley

Langwith

Warner-Medley has had experience being LGBT rep for both his college and currently YUSU. Warner-Medley is against “big, practical policies”, and claims that to concentrate on one thing is to neglect a hundred. However, he wants to ensure all avenues of communication are used properly, and believes signposting is essential to communicate welfare services to students. He also aims for more extensive training for college welfare reps and ensuring that housing information comes out earlier in the spring term. Warner-Medley has a passion for welfare and plenty of experience to back it up. Winning York Come Dancing shows he can garner popular support. But can he offer anything new to the role?
