York dominated underwater hockey on the first day of the roses, with a clear lead and win for York, and an overall final score of 2-5.
For someone who knows nothing about underwater hockey, this match was an incredibly confusing, nonetheless incredibly interesting watch. To add, for a relatively short match, and for a sport I only learnt about incredibly recently, it was fascinating to see such a large audience watching, with the swimming pool reaching full capacity.
Throughout the game, York took the lead, but the game begin with large confusion, especially due to the similar colours of the caps and goggles. A confusing game to report on since it was underwater, can’t imagine having to play it!
Nonetheless, despite a goal for Lancaster about 5 minutes into the game, and Lancaster incredibly close behind York (especially around half time), York remained in the lead.
However, the interesting part of this match was the controversial refereeing, with a lot of confusion regarding scores. Live radio suggested that the score was 5-5 at some point during the middle fo the game, but a final score of 5-2 was announced.
Nonetheless, an amazing win for York on the first day of the tournaments, an amazing crowd, and an amazing team which led York to victory.
