An incredibly disappointing defeat for York men’s football on the second day of the Roses Tournament, with Lancaster winning by a landslide. With a final score of 4-1, Lancaster dominated the match from the very beginning, and whilst York played incredibly well, red took the lead.
The match kept everyone on their toes from the very beginning, with Lancaster scoring their first goal within the first two minutes of the game!
However, York made a swift comeback, with number 11 following with a goal within the first ten minutes. York then made it to an even score of 1-1, levelling out the playing field as soon as possible.
The game was incredibly strong, especially in the first half of the match. A number of almost-goals were attempted by Lancaster, however, York’s incredible defending meant that the score stayed even, a clear example being an incredible save by the York goalkeeper following a free kick.
However, not long later, Lancaster scored their second goal, and York could not match it easily. Whilst there were incredible attempts, for example York’s number 6 making an incredible attempt, Lancaster’s defending was incredible, especially by their goalkeeper.
An important aspect to note, however, were the number of fouls given throughout this game. Of course, this is not at all uncommon in a game of football, but the atmosphere was certainly tense, with a small fight occurring on the pitch early in the game, along with swearing exchanges between rival spectators.
As a result of the number of fouls, there were also a number of free kicks provided for both red and white, however, both goal keepers demonstrated their strong abilities, and the fourth goal of the game wasn’t scored until the very ending of the first half of the game.
This was number 78 of Lancaster who scored, making the score 3-1 before a break. The crowd was absolutely wild, with a number of safety concerns being raised when a Lancastrian threw a red smoke flare onto the pitch, and one of the players threw it back into the crowd.
Moreover, the volume of the crowd was also incredibly large, with a large number of individuals in attendance from both the reds and the whites.
Interestingly, during half time, York did not return to the changing rooms, and reassessed strategy outside, whilst Lancaster returned to their changing rooms, and both teams returned with strong play.
Yet, York just couldn’t win. With excellent defending from both York and Lancaster, it was difficult for either side to score any points. In addition, a number of missed opportunities led to disappointed fans (of both York and Lancaster, despite the Lancaster lead).
The final goal of the game was scored by the captain of Lancaster, and whilst there were certainly a large number of amazing attempts from York, they could not score another goal. With a final score of 4-1, Lancaster took the lead at the beginning of the game, and retained it.
Bad luck for York, and a disappointing loss on the evening of the second day of the Roses.
